Grand Tuhon Jerson "Nene" Tortal - A true spirit of a grandmaster
on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 11:10 PM CET Posted by : admin
Grandmaster Tortal, we call him "Nene" as he is know, is in USA giving series of seminars to his students. You can check the details from his web site www.dtskali.com .

I become a proud student of grandmaster in 1998 in Manila while I was living in the Philippines. He is also my God father and accepted me as a lifelong student.

A small selected group of students and friends, we could train day and night where ever we found an empty spot. This could be an open empty car park (at nights) site in the middle of Makati City, sea side spot along Roxas Bouleward in Manila and also our usual training hall. It was important for us that once we got hold of grand master, he trained us. I don't recall him turning us down for any reason, if he was available he always come along and we enjoyed his company immensely.

We travelled to events for demonstrations, trained young people at the universities and enjoyed every bit of it.

The Dekiti-Tirsia Siradas System is an ancient Filipino combat and survival system indigenous to the island of Negros in the Visayan Region of the Philippines. This fighting art is very combative with emphasis on impact and bladed weapons as well as empty hand techniques and even firearms. It has been proven effective many times in actual combat. The name of the system consists three words from the Ilonggo dialect. Dekiti translated into the Tagalog dialect is “Malapit” of “Dekit”. In English it means very close or near. Its emphasis is on close quarter fighting in which you corner the opponent in an area, to close and devastate him. Tirsia means “gua sa wala” or “sa tuo” or quartering in fighting, “pasulod”. It means to push the enemy to a corner or an area with a three-corner side preventing him from escaping or running away from multiple deadly blows and thrusts. Siradas means to stop your opponent from getting in or out, for the opponent not to be able to penetrate in any angle of attack.

Attendance
on Thursday, March 27, 2008 - 08:57 PM CET Posted by : admin
Once athletes register for classes, attendance becomes both a right and a responsibility. Sports club is an active partner with students and parents (for younger athletes) in the task of ensuring that all athletes meet or exceed the learning objectives and standards. Consistent attendance and athletes’ development success have a positive correlation.

It provides basic tool which can be utilized to target individual athletes encountering problems in their sport lives. For younger athletes, it reassures parents and the wider community. It enables athletes to take full advantage of the sports activities and learning, eliminates truancy. For club, allows identification of attendance patterns to make improvements, verify that the athlete complies with the required attendance and help for athlete’s development review.

For regular grading exams minimum %80-90 attendance required. It is directly linked with the achievement levels. (3, Sayokan)Attendance registration will show up to date information of the athletes. In any given session, provide information to know the whereabouts of every student for safety and other reasons. If there is a safety issue during the class (like fire etc.) and in case of evacuation, it helps to know that everybody is safe and well.

In the absence of young athletes if the parents are not contacted the coach, the coach will contact them to ask why they were absent It will help to increase development of advanced level athletes and further development of new coaches.

Warm Up
on Monday, December 10, 2007 - 05:30 AM CET Posted by : admin
Warm up is done to prepare students for the actual training session. It is literally raising core body temperature 1-2 degrees Celsius (1.4 to 2.8 degrees Fahrenheit). It’s done in three stages of general warm-up, stretching and sport specific activity. Proper warming-up not only loosen stiff muscles, improves performance as well. It’s standard and essential in all training sessions (additions can be made if the instructor sees necessary) in every Sayokan clubs and takes around 30 minutes.

Sayokan warm up planned to improve Alp’s level of performance, develop physical strength and flexibility needed and build on it, accelerate the recovery process needed before training again, increase awareness, improve coordination, improve elasticity and contractibility of muscles, and a greater efficiency of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. As a result, warm up and cool down is an essential part of both the training session and competition itself.Basic drills and techniques are added to the warm up and cool down in order to integrate well with the training session and cover the entire syllabus. In the warm-up intensity starts low and then gradually increases.

By the end of the warm-up, the exercises reach the target intensity planned for the beginning of the main part of the workout. Starting the warm-up at a high intensity is counterproductive and so is having drastic changes from a high to a low intensity of exercises.

Due to counter productive nature, active and isometric stretches are not part of the warm up. They are likely to cause stretched muscle to be too tired to perform the actual activity of the training session for which body is prepared.

Last week the South African Protea karate team (full contact) comprisingmembers of Ashihara Karate, African Enshin as well as Kyokushin (Matsushima)returned from Turkey after competing in the World Bravery Games, a fullcontact - no pads, no gloves event fought on grass in a soccer stadium, organised by the Turkish Sayokan Federation.

Hoosain Narker (Director of Ashihara Karate) served as delegationleader/coach with Shihan Trevor Fredericks (UWC dojo) as the Manager. Theteam placed third overall with Haashim Mullins (a Ashihara student nowliving in Ruyterwacht) narrowly missing gold in the lightweight division ashe could not fight the final fight due to doctor's orders as he hadsustained a bad cut above his eye in a previous fight.

Haashim weighed in at58kg and was the lightest fighter and outweighed by at least 20kg. He waswell supported by everyone, even rival teams, during his fights as theyadmired his spirit.Abubakr Petersen (Kyokushin Wynberg) was awarded with the "most technicalfighter award". Abubakr made it to the second day and was unfortunatelyeliminated in the semi-finals.

Other members of the team sadly was eliminated in the first day's rounds offighting, but a few of them also received awards for their excellentperformance. What stood the team in good stead was the fact that Narker knew aboutacclimatising and carbo-loading. The tournament was held in Kayseri City andeveryone stayed at a ski-resort (Erciyes) which was 2215m above sea-level.
