on Monday, December 01, 2008 - 11:08 AM CET Posted by : admin
My Karate Odyssey is Ashihara Karate instructor, Hoosain Narker’s, six months journey across North & Central America with his karate suit (dogi), backpack & laptop as travelling companions.

The author starts off with a background of how his spirit was developed under the harsh “Apartheid” regime in South Africa. This spirit gave rise to his quest to undertake a six month journey across North and Central America by road.

During this time period, in which he traveled a total of 48 000 miles (78 000km), he faced many adversities - a bus crash, travel passes declared invalid, visa hassles, language difficulties, the longing for home, different food, lack of finance, etc.

Despite all this he persevered.Throughout the book, he writes about the many places he had visited and the training at the many dojo and the impressions created. He managed to successfully compete in two events - a full contact, no pads challenge and a Taekwondo Hanmadang. The Journal concludes with profiles of about 70 of the instructors he had met and trained with.

Hoosain Narker, the International Director for Ashihara Karate, started his Martial Arts career in 1974 as a ten year old. Prior to his introduction to the Ashihara Way, he has experienced various other martial arts.

He has traveled the World Over in training and teaching this unique brand of Karate. Whilst not tournament oriented, he has competed with distinction in numerous championships. He holds Dan ranking in Kyokushinkai, Goju Ryu & Taekwondo.

Hoosain continues to teach classes on a full time basis in Cape Town, South Africa, from where he oversees the International Ashihara Karate Organisation. For more information about the author and book please visit http://www.karateodyssey.com/ .

About Safranbolu:

Safranbolu is a district and a town of Karabük Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. Its location can be roughly described as about two hundred kilometers north of Ankara and about a hundred kilometers south of the Black Sea coast, or more precisely as about 9 kilometers north of the city of Karabük. Former Turkish names of her were Zalifre and Taraklıborlu.

The Old Town preserves many old buildings, with 1008 registered historical artifacts. These are: 1 private museum, 25 mosques, 5 tombs, 8 historical fountains, 5 Turkish baths, 3 caravanserais, 1 historical clock tower, 1 sundial and hundreds of houses and mansions. Also there are mounds of ancient settlements, rock tombs and historical bridges. The Old Town is situated in a deep ravine in a fairly dry area in the rain shadow of the mountains. The New Town can be found on the plateau about two kilometers west of the Old Town.

The name of the town derives from saffron, since Safranbolu was a trading place and a center for growing saffron.Today saffron is still alive at the village of Davutobası which is 22 km.east of Safranbolu and probably one of the best quality saffron at the world.

Safranbolu was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1994 due to its well-preserved Ottoman era houses and architecture.

Grand Tuhon Jerson "Nene" Tortal - A true spirit of a grandmaster
on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 11:10 PM CET Posted by : admin
Grandmaster Tortal, we call him "Nene" as he is known, is in USA giving series of seminars to his students. You can check the details from his web site www.dtskali.com .

I become a proud student of grandmaster in 1998 in Manila while I was living in the Philippines. He is also my God father and accepted me as a lifelong student.

A small selected group of students and friends, we could train day and night where ever we found an empty spot. This could be an open empty car park (at nights) site in the middle of Makati City, sea side spot along Roxas Bouleward in Manila and also our usual training hall. It was important for us that once we got hold of grand master, he trained us. I don't recall him turning us down for any reason, if he was available he always come along and we enjoyed his company immensely.

We travelled to events for demonstrations, trained young people at the universities and enjoyed every bit of it.

The Dekiti-Tirsia Siradas System is an ancient Filipino combat and survival system indigenous to the island of Negros in the Visayan Region of the Philippines. This fighting art is very combative with emphasis on impact and bladed weapons as well as empty hand techniques and even firearms. It has been proven effective many times in actual combat. The name of the system consists three words from the Ilonggo dialect. Dekiti translated into the Tagalog dialect is “Malapit” of “Dekit”. In English it means very close or near. Its emphasis is on close quarter fighting in which you corner the opponent in an area, to close and devastate him. Tirsia means “gua sa wala” or “sa tuo” or quartering in fighting, “pasulod”. It means to push the enemy to a corner or an area with a three-corner side preventing him from escaping or running away from multiple deadly blows and thrusts. Siradas means to stop your opponent from getting in or out, for the opponent not to be able to penetrate in any angle of attack.
